The Problem

HV Line inspection is essential for any company that privately owns or operates a network of significant power line assets. Many issues were raised in the initial conversation, including the time required for the local team to conduct the inspection and manually report on the inspection process. With the poles and lines in some inaccessible areas for EWP, getting the team to inspect these assets manually seemed like a daunting task. However, these assets are a vital part of the network at the steel plant, and the distribution lines cover expansive regions of the plant.

DHA Approch

During initial meetings, it was discussed with the Client that the opportunity would be tendered out to multiple drone companies for a trial of the project for the remaining 100km still to be surveyed. During that tender, DHA made sure the client was well aware of our Pilots are how highly trained are DHA would maintain all the safety standards while doing aerial inspections of assets through to wind turbines. DHA also realised that to reduce time on-site, we must use Unleash Live to report on the condition they help minimise operator and Client time on the project. The Client’s attention was on an extensive shutdown to one of the plants, and during this time, they could maintain dominance on the HV line. We were working with the Client’s priorities.

The Solution

March 2022, DHA used Unleashlive Autofly and AI-driven images. DHA also covered several hotpots using a thermal imaging camera for each asset. A range of thermal data was captured using humidity detectors and sensors to add to the growing list of images already collected. DHA captured several asset photos using a ground support team, including a pilot and payload operator. The AI-driven results for this project were produced o the Client with Geo-referenced images and reports.

During the exercise, DHA live-streamed using Unleash Live low latency streaming service, which uploaded the flights to the client account to ensure all drone flights had been carried out to the Client’s satisfaction. Unfortunately, several defects were found and will now be rectified, including hotspots and general wear and tear. DHA loved working on this project from start to finish and embarking on this opportunity with the Client and Unleash Live.
